Young children traveling without a parent or legal guardian are considered to be
Unaccompanied Minors. If you are allowing your child to fly alone as an
unaccompanied minor, be sure to take every necessary precaution to ensure his or
her safety.
The unaccompanied minor service is required for children aged 5 to 11
traveling alone on Japan Airlines (JAL) flights. For children aged 12 to 17, the
service is not mandatory, but it remains available as an optional service for
this age group.
Children under the age of 5 are not permitted to travel
alone and must be accompanied by an adult.
To book a flight for an
unaccompanied minor, reservations must be made through the JAL reservation
center (International Reservation and Information). The service fee for
unaccompanied minors is $150 (plus tax) each way.
When making the
booking, please be ready to provide contact details for a parent or guardian at
both the departure and arrival locations, as well as any transfer points. A
mandatory consent form must also be signed and submitted.
JAL will not
accept unaccompanied minors on flights with the following conditions:
• A
connection with another airline, including codeshare and oneworld partners
• Ground or co-terminal transfers (unaccompanied minors under 15 cannot use
ground transportation alone)
• The last flight of the day from the final
connection city, unless it is the only flight scheduled
• Overnight
connecting flights, unless it is the only flight scheduled
These policies may differ, however, so you should check with Japan Airlines for a description of its rules and services and any additional
charges that may apply.
